If you’re a fan of historical fiction, you might also be fond of historical narrative non-fiction, which is how I would characterize this work by Graham Moore. I really enjoyed this book not only because I am interested in the subject matter (the race for and subsequent fights resulting from the invention of the light bulb), but because it’s an extremely well-written account of the stories and the time period. I raced through this book. It reads like fiction, but you’ll learn something about history while being entertained.<\/p>\n

This will be on my list of favorite books forever. I’m a fan of music and even more so of the art behind its creation. The Daisy character is flawlessly flawed and powerful. I fell in love with her without the benefit of physical presence, which points to really good writing. This is as believable a story about the ups and downs of a band in the 70s faced with success as is possible to write. It’s believable to a point that my dad read it and was disappointed when he couldn’t find their music online. He didn’t realize it was a work of fiction.<\/p>\n

There are some wickedly powerful passages in this book about the pain endured through the creative process. Read this book before the TV series comes out.<\/p>\n

This account of what happened behind the scenes of Theranos, a Silicon Valley start-up that went from a $9 Billion valuation to worthless is mind-boggling. The amount of “looking the other way” that was going on is nuts, and makes you wonder: Is anyone paying attention to anything<\/em>?<\/p>\n

READING<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Sam Harris has written a handful of books covering various topics, but this is the first I’ve attempted to tackle. “Attempted” is a solid word choice here because Sam is uber-intelligent and not an author whose ideas you can retain without full focus. I’m an avid listener of his podcast, Waking Up with Sam Harris<\/em>, and have been for a few years now. Sam’s a controversial figure, but you don’t have to agree with every point he argues to find his discussions enlightening. I recommend this book as well as his podcast, but have a dictionary handy for reference!<\/p>\n

The spirit of Alfred Hitchcock is alive and well in this psychological thriller by A.J. Finn. The story is being adapted for theaters in a movie starring Amy Adams as the female lead. It’s set for release in 2019. Personally, I’m imagining Emily Blunt in the role as I read, but only because she’s played a similar character well, in my opinion, in the film version of The Girl On The Train<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
